Map Skills — Geography 練習ワークシート
Maps are tools for representing Earth's surface. Key elements include title, legend (key), scale, compass rose, and grid lines. Understanding these lets you locate places and interpret spatial information.
Latitude lines run east-west and measure distance north or south of the equator (0°). Longitude lines run north-south and measure east or west of the Prime Meridian (0°, Greenwich, England). Coordinates use (latitude, longitude).
Map scale shows the ratio between map distance and real distance. A scale of 1:100,000 means 1 cm on the map equals 100,000 cm (1 km) on the ground.

解答集
-
1.
最終回答: Latitude lines run east-west and measure distance north or south of the Equator. Longitude lines run north-south and measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. Together they form a grid system used to locate places on Earth.
-
2.
最終回答: b) To indicate the relationship between distance on the map and actual distance on Earth.
-
3.
最終回答: Cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. Intermediate directions: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest.
-
4.
最終回答: b) Explain the symbols and colors on the map.
-
5.
最終回答: The Equator (0 degrees latitude).

6.
最終回答: a) 0 degrees longitude.

7.
最終回答: Map projections are necessary because the Earth is a sphere and maps are flat. A limitation is that all projections distort at least one of the following: shape, area, distance, or direction. For example, the Mercator projection greatly distorts the size of landmasses near the poles.
-
8.
3.5 inches 100 miles/inch = 350 miles.最終回答: 3.5 inches 100 miles/inch = 350 miles.
-
9.
最終回答: d) Musical map.
-
10.
最終回答: A compass rose is a symbol on a map that shows the orientation of the map. It displays the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and often the intermediate directions. By aligning the compass rose with a real compass, a person can determine which way to travel. This helps the user understand the map's layout and navigate accurately.
避けるべきよくある間違い
- Confusing latitude with longitude
- Forgetting that latitude comes first in coordinates (lat, long)
- Misreading scale units
- Ignoring map projection distortions at poles
