Parts of Speech — Grammar & Composition Übungsblatt
Every word in a sentence has a job to do, and those jobs are called parts of speech. Learning the eight parts of speech helps you build clearer sentences and fix mistakes in your writing.
Nouns name people, places, things, and ideas, like teacher, park, pencil, and happiness. Verbs show actions or states of being, like run, jump, is, and seem. Adjectives describe nouns, telling what kind or how many, like red, tiny, or three.
Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, often telling how or when something happens. Many adverbs end in -ly, such as quickly and softly. Pronouns take the place of nouns so we do not repeat ourselves, like he, she, it, and they.
Prepositions show how words relate to each other, often telling where or when, like in, on, under, and before. Conjunctions join words or groups of words, like and, but, and or. Interjections are short words that show sudden feeling, like wow, ouch, and hurray.
To identify a word's part of speech, ask what job it does in that exact sentence. The same word can do different jobs in different sentences, so always look at how it is used.
